Moscow Bondage Fest

Anti-Erotophobia

” Nonetheless, I’m just saying, I really like sex. We have no idea what sex would be like in a world that saw it basically as a good. A weird good. A good that can tip you over and make you want to do strange things. A good that can reveal your incoherence, your love of a little disorder, your love of a little control (adjust the dial as you like). A good that can make you happy, for a minute, before the cat starts scratching the corner of the bed, or the phone rings, or the kids mew, or you’re hungry and sleepy, or you need another drink or the taxi comes.”

sexe moderne 2

A fibreglass sculpture by Philippe Meste, discovered accidentally tonight while reading Beautiful, Depraved for the first time. Solid, full-body containment. I love the aesthetic of this piece, and I love the sort of experience it represents for the ‘performer’ inside it. It was only after a minute or so of really examining the work that I realized the degree to which it functions as full-body bondage gear. That started me thinking about the crossover between bondage and performed art. A couple years ago I created a performance piece for a local Toronto alternative theatre festival that, in retrospect, was probably more self-restraint-focused than I realized at the time. It seems obvious now, when I look back on it. And the time, though, the bondage elements and aesthetics were not, however, the main focus of the piece – much in the same way as I don’t think the bondage is the main focus in Meste’s “sexe moderne 2″.
I’m curious as to where other folks find a similar sort of crossover. Art that isn’t playing with bondage or BDSM themes specifically, but which contain images or ideas that are – to a particular eye – unavoidably kinky. I could look to the physical endurance work of Vito Acconci, Stelarc, Chris Burden or Bob Flanagan… anyone else come to mind?

Flights booked…

Roughly two and a half months to go until Shibaricon. 74 days and some hours, according to the website.

So I found – quite suddenly, while at work – a pretty great seat sale on from Air Canada, and very quickly purchased my flights to and from Chicago in May. So – that part of Shibaricon is dealt with. Now, I just need to figure out the hotel room.

I am really thinking about booking at the host hotel, the Hyatt Regency O’Hare, if for no other reason than to support the event. Now that I’m working for an events company myself, I know how important that sort of thing can be, how good it makes the event look to the hotel itself. And really, the cost per night, after the Shibaricon discount, it’s pretty comparable to what’s available elsewhere, and in the area. I’ll probably mull over the choices for another week or two, and then book myself a room. I thought (briefly, very briefly) about the idea of splitting the room, but I figured for my first time out I was going to need a private refuge. I know myself and my introverted ways that well, by now.

So, I’ll be landing in Chicago on the 23rd at 10:45ish. And flying back to Toronto on the 26th at 18:30. That’s going to be three and a half days chock full of rope. Now that the schedule for the event is up, I’m going to start to plan my days. I know for sure I’ll be attending Graydancer’s “Defining Moment” at 14:30 on the Friday – I actually sort of planned my flight time around it. 16:30 will either be with Tatu or Lqqkout, not sure yet. And… that’s about as far as I’ve planned, right now.

Exciting. Very exciting.
